City as Nature

Lotus 157 (2015)

In addition to the customary way of looking at the city as the epitome of artifice, it is possible to direct our gaze in such a way as to go beyond the conceptual and physical limits of the urban environment as it is commonly understood. In essence, we could give back to urban geography the role that it deserves. In doing so, city planning is faced with the phenomena of the natural ecosystem—always present anyway—which manifests itself through an infinite range of events, linked to the weather as well as the landscape. A new sensibility is emerging as a consequence of these changes in the focus of our attention, and so we are having to say goodbye to a vision of architecture as purely and simply a matter of building.
